Target Audience
This symposium will be of interest to consultant pharmacists who work with geriatrric patients. The program will provide a clinical update on the management of dementia in the elderly from the perspectives of the healthcare professional and caregiver. In addition, the regulatory perspective will be addressed regarding the interrelationships among MDS (Minimum Data Set), Resident Assessment Instrument, and the new HCFA guidelines, and ASCP’s MedGuide. Achieving optimal patient care in our "managed cost" environment will be discussed.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
Identify the issues surrounding the total care of the elderly patient with psychosis.
Summarize the interrelationships among the various assessment tools used to appropriately impact patient outcomes.
Describe the optimal therapeutic interventions for the treatment of the elderly patient with psychosis.
Assess the newest data concerning atypical antipsychotics with respect to their efficacy and safety in the managed cost environment.
